Tutoring Evaluations

July 2024 - Current

Summary

Funder: Accelerate

YPL has partnered with Accelerate on three randomized controlled trials of small group tutoring programs with different populations. We are seeking to understand the impact of these tutoring programs on student achievement, the conditions required for successful implementation, and which students may benefit most from small-group tutoring.

  • Ed Corps: From Fall 2024 - Spring 2025, YPL evaluated the effect of implementation support for in-person literacy tutoring for students reading below grade level in grades K-3.
  • Cignition: In the same time period (Fall 2024 - Spring 2025), YPL evaluated virtual math tutoring for students below grade level in grades 3-6.
  • Carnegie Learning: Beginning in Fall 2025, we launched an evaluation of a virtual Algebra I tutoring program for 8th graders (regardless of prior achievement) and for 9th-12th graders who had not passed the state Algebra I assessment. Much of the tutoring research to date has focused on K-5 literacy; YPL is pleased to explore the effectiveness of tutoring for this under-studied subject and age group.
